Goal Setting and Action Steps

Happy New Year!  This is a busy time for you!  Working with your clients on goal setting and action steps can be exciting for some and intimidating for others.  How do we make it matter?  How do you help your customers set better goals?

BETTER GOALS

A health or life coach working with a customer to ensure their goals align with their values involves a process of exploration, clarification, and integration. Here’s a step-by-step approach:

  1. Initial Assessment: Begin with a comprehensive assessment of the client’s current situation, including their health, lifestyle, personal challenges, and aspirations. This helps in understanding their starting point.
  2. Identify Core Values: Engage the client in a conversation to identify their core values. These are the guiding principles that are most important in their life. Examples include family, health, career success, integrity, or personal growth. Tools like value-sort cards or lists can be helpful.
  3. Explore Goals: Ask the client to articulate their goals. These should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Ensure these goals are expressed in the client’s words to reflect their aspirations.
  4. Align Goals with Values: Discuss how each stated goal aligns (or doesn’t align) with the identified values. For example, if a client values family time but aims to work 60 hours a week to advance their career, there might be a misalignment.
  5. Adjust Goals as Necessary: If a misalignment is identified, work with the client to adjust their goals. This might mean redefining the goals, breaking them into more manageable steps, or finding a balance between competing interests and values.
  6. Develop an Action Plan: Once goals are aligned with values, help the client develop a detailed action plan. This plan should outline the steps they need to take, resources required, and a timeline for achieving their goals.
  7. Regular Review and Reflection: Schedule regular sessions to review progress, reflect on the journey, and make adjustments as necessary. This helps in keeping the goals relevant and aligned with the client’s values over time.
  8. Encourage Self-Reflection: Encourage the client to regularly reflect on their values and goals. Personal reflection helps in maintaining alignment over time, especially as life circumstances change.
  9. Support and Accountability: Provide ongoing support and accountability. Celebrate successes and provide encouragement and guidance through challenges.
  10. Holistic Approach: Remember that goal setting is not just about achieving specific outcomes but also about personal growth and fulfillment. Ensure that the process respects the client’s whole self – their mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions.

By following this approach, a health or life coach can help clients set goals that are not only achievable but also deeply fulfilling and in harmony with their core values.

“Effective coaching is about guiding others to establish and pursue value-driven goals, ensuring actions align with deeper motivations and long-term visions..”
