From a 30-Year Twin Study: Physical Activity, Aging & Mortality

Conducted by: University of Jyväskylä, Finland
Published in: European Journal of Epidemiology

This 30-year twin study from the University of Jyväskylä brings some nuanced insights into the impact of long-term physical activity on mortality and biological aging:

Key Findings:

Moderate Physical Activity = Best Longevity Boost:

  • Moderate activity reduced mortality by 7% over 30 years.
  • Surprisingly, higher levels of activity didn’t provide additional benefits for longevity.

No Mortality Reduction from Meeting WHO Guidelines:

  • Following WHO activity guidelines (150-300 min moderate or 75-150 min vigorous/week) didn’t significantly lower mortality when comparing genetically identical twins who differed in activity levels.

Biological Aging Shows a U-Shaped Curve:

  • Both sedentary and highly active individuals were biologically older than the moderately active.
  • Highly active people were 1.2 years biologically older than the moderately active group.

Confounding Factors:

  • Lifestyle elements like smoking, drinking, and pre-existing conditions may have skewed results.
  • Reduced physical activity may stem from early disease stages, not necessarily cause poorer outcomes.

Big Picture Insight:

A healthy lifestyle as a whole, rather than just high physical activity, might be key to longevity and slower biological aging.

Bottom Line:

While moderate physical activity shows clear benefits, pushing physical limits doesn’t always equate to better health outcomes. It’s the balance—and broader lifestyle choices—that matter most.

“Exercise is medicine. Just like any medicine, the dose makes the difference between benefit and harm.”
