Do you sleep through the night?

Do you fall asleep right when you lay down?

Do you stay sleeping all night long? Do you wake up when your partner runs to the bathroom, or do you wake up with sweats, pain, or anxiety?

The last three years, my husband woke up and went to the bathroom, or roamed the house, or went down the hall to the living room and turned on the news and fell asleep again in his recliner.

That would wake me up and I would lay in bed thinking about everything I needed to do.  That’s why many of you would see me online at 3 a.m., and I know you’re not sleeping great because I ran into you there too.

There are a lot of people who stay awake because of sleep apnea, hormones, or, if you have our Sleep Program, you know there are a lot of reasons you’re not sleeping and it’s a vicious cycle.  From the research we did on the program, I found that a good sleep routine can’t be beat.  From life experience and working with customers, I know that a good sleep environment can’t be beat.

The information I’m going to share with you today is about a bed.  It’s a bed that was designed specifically for pain.  Then, there are other beds that were designed to be clean, luxurious, and affordable.  I’ll tell you about those as well.

the first week

a new bed

lSome of you know that I got to play Oprah last year, giving away beds and Vitamix’s and other goodies.  Well, I got a new bed too.  It’s called Level-Sleep and it is made specifically for people in pain.  I’m not in pain, my husband is.  In 1969, he broke his neck and at the time, there was only one successful surgery for putting things back the way they were supposed to be, so he chose not to do it.  Things fused on their own and arthritis grew as he got older and now, he is holding his head up with muscles, and not his neck or bones.  So he is in pain.  In February, he was advised to have a surgery, we got two other opinions, who said it was more likely he’d be turned into a vegetable than saved from eventual paralysis. So, he resigned himself to being in pain for the rest of his life.

At this same time, Level-Sleep sent us a bed to try out that is designed for people in pain.  They sent a couple of pillows too.

The neighbor said to give the bed an A+ on delivery and setup – it was a breeze.  We’ve (he) had the opposite experience with other beds.  He helps out a lot so he gets to put in his opinion on that piece.

I tried the pillow first.  I thought it was pretty cool that there was a spot for the ear when sleeping on your side.  I figured I’d be able to hear better.  I didn’t realize I moved around so much in my sleep.  I was hot and didn’t sleep on the pillow again.

Gary slept on the pillow the second night and didn’t get used to it, but tried it the third night and now he won’t sleep without it.  It holds his neck in place and makes him feel secure.  He’s told everyone he knows about it because it’s been that good for him.

He is also a skeptic.  As positive as I am, he is negative.  To be honest, we were both nervous because we liked the bed we’d had.  He kept saying “I can’t tell if I like it.”  I noticed something right away, and that was, he quit waking up all night long.  He used to wake up several times a night and now he was sleeping all the way through. That in itself can increase quality of life immensely.

We were flooded the second day we had the bed and my lower back hurt when I went to bed.  He, of course hurt like normal.  He never slows down anyway.  We both woke up feeling good in the morning.  Gary goes from 3-10 on the pain scale during the day to night and he was waking up at 1 and feeling better than 10 sometimes at the end of the day.

I plan on trying the pillow again with a crisper pillow case.  Gary wouldn’t change a thing.  Beds and pillows, like lifestyle changes are bio-individual.  It is better that it work for Gary than for me.

it just gets better

the compounded effect

The more nights you sleep straight through, the better it gets.  The more rested you are, the easier it is to handle stress and pain.

I talked about the bed the first week and lots of people were interested.  There must be a lot of people in pain.  I told them I wasn’t 100% sure it was the bed.  How could you be after a few days?  So I went a month.  I had Gary give me his sleep tracker information and I was right – he was sleeping better.  I know I was sleeping better – because he was.

Another thing, I get hot at night and need a cool bed, cool sheets, cool temperature.  I stay cool in this bed.  I was visualizing us in the 50’s movie version with different beds, the twin beds with one foot on the floor!  We’re both comfortable and get to continue to share a bed and a room.

When we first got married, he had to have a bed that felt like a piece of wood.  This is softer.  I’m very pleased with it.  I’m grateful to have it because of Gary and I was really happy to have it when I hurt from getting water out of the house and moving furniture.  It’s really ingenious.

I was thrilled with the materials.  They are much cleaner than most mattresses and they are coming out with a purely clean mattress soon.

other beds

everyone sleeps differently

The other beds include a luxury, 100% clean bed, and the budget mattress.

Ashlie has the luxurious version, DreamCloud (the one we were going to have before we got the level-sleep for Gary).  She loved it, her husband loves it.  Now, she gets warm sleeping on it.  That’s why it’s so important when you’re choosing your bed to get the right one. I interviewed JJ for this week’s podcast and the beds all have a warranty.  I think that takes the fear factor out and makes it a no lose proposition to choose a bed.

My Level-Sleep Bed has a 365 Day Warranty, I don’t know how you can ask for anything better than that.

Amanda wrote this about her Nectar bed;

To give a little background first, I have been using a high-quality mattress up until a month ago but it was, I think maybe 12 years old.  It’s definitely seen its share of wear and tear after raising three kids and countless pets, yet I still considered it to be an okay mattress at this point.  I was waking up once or twice a night and not feeling overly rested in the morning, but it wasn’t horrible.  I just assumed it was part of my ‘getting older’ process.

Then my Nectar Memory Foam Mattress arrived with two Memory Foam pillows.  I was skeptical.  It arrived rolled up in a vacuum sealed plastic wrap.  I remember thinking, “This can’t possibly be better than a

regular mattress.  There is no substance to it!”.  But I unwrapped it and cut the plastic wrap off.  It said to wait 24 hours for it to be fully ‘inflated’ but it actually was a lot faster.

I decided to finally test it out.  I noticed immediately how it DIDN’T make all the noises my regular mattress made.  There were no springs or anything to move around.  But what surprised me was how well the mattress adjusted to me.  What was supposed to be just a few minutes test trial turned into me staying and relaxing in bed for a few hours.  It was wonderful.  Every single aspect of my body felt supported in a way my older mattress never did.  I was genuinely excited for bedtime that evening.

The next few days I did wake up with a little bit of a sore back, but I think it was just my body adjusting to the new support.  Since then, and I’ve been sleeping on it for about a month now, I have been waking up feeling rested.  I almost never wake up in the middle of the night anymore.  Things I had believed to be due to aging were actually due to a mattress that wasn’t adequate.  Every night I sink into the mattress with a contented sigh because of how perfectly it supports me.

I’ve even had to fight off my kids.  They used to stay on the couch when there were watching a movie on the tablet or playing a game on their phone.  Now I catch them in my room kicking back on the bed.  Even they recognize how superior it is to the mattress I had previously.  My daughter has even hijacked one of the pillows and she has found that her breathing at night (she has asthma) has improved significantly.

I can’t even begin to say just how much I love this mattress.  Waking up feeling refreshed each morning has given me the motivation I needed to start early morning workouts again.  I feel the best I’ve felt in a long time and I expect it to only continue to improve.  If you are considering a mattress, I can’t recommend this one enough.  If you are unsure about the idea of memory foam because you are stuck in the traditional spring mattress style, trust me on this, you will not regret switching.  It is everything I didn’t know I needed in a mattress.

Amy Korn-Reavis, our Clinical Sleep Educator received a bed, I got to surprise her with it in our podcast on Sleep.  Thank you for that as well JJ.  I love giving presents.  You can find her review on her website

Thank You DreamCloud, Nectar, and Level-Sleep.

The Health Coach Group thanks you as well, I’m pretty sure we’re all better workers because of our beds.  How would that be for a corporate wellness incentive?  New beds for the big thinkers and producers would pay-off pretty fast.

Chiropractors, orthopedists, personal trainers, physical therapists, and really, any health professional,  if you want to offer something that will improve the quality of life for your patients, I personally will vouch for Level-Sleep.  They have an affiliate program that you can sign up for and you can track your patient’s experience.
