The Health Coach Group

The Story Behind the Company

You may know, I was a happy Interior Designer for 34 years.  It was brick and mortar because that was the only way I could do that business and feel like I was giving the kind of value I should.  In my mind, custom-made everything was something that the people who paid for my services deserved.  Now I know that it was a limiting belief that kept me from moving forward in that business and move from one-on-one to mass marketing and selling design online.

In 2010, I, like many other health coaches ran into health problems that the medical world couldn’t fix.  I was able to fix my problems and see results, literally within 24 hours of changing what and how I ate.  Which led me to a year of intense nutritional study and to IIN.

First came David Wolfe’s Raw Food Nutrition Certification and then came IIN.  Back in those days, IIN sent their classes out on an iPod and I was able to complete all the modules before my class even started…then, I just took the tests and passed.  During this time, I attended my first IIN conference, where I was shocked by the thousands of bright health coaches who wanted to make a difference in the world, but couldn’t find work.

At that time, there were no jobs.  Now, in more progressive communities and with the right credentials, you can get a job as a health coach, but for the most part, you need to learn to be an entrepreneur.  And, not all people are built to be entrepreneurs.

I left that conference with a plan, to build a group of health coaches and use my marketing skills to keep everyone busy.  My plan was to begin the company in September of 2012.  Before I began, I intended to attend Marie Forleo’s (yep, this is what it was called then), Rich, Happy, & Hot Bschool.  Marie had been a guest on Tony Robbins “Money Masters” series and I knew she could teach me what I needed to know to go from brick and mortar to an online business.

When I started B-School, I already had a busy, thriving business in Interior Design.  It was my intention to plan out The Health Coach Group to start in September and move my design business to an online format.

I jumped into B-School, like I do everything, with full force.  I started up Facebook Communities, got into a Mastermind with fellow students, and thrived.  Both businesses grew along with the course material.  I bounced back and forth and even toyed with starting a VA company.  In the end, The Health Coach Group arrived early (in April) and the design company stayed where it was….on the ground.

The Health Coach Group ran some ads and advertised for health coaches and spent quite a bit of time building health programs and keeping track of coaches, coaching sessions and clients.  Our first advertisement to fill a coaching position brought 684 applicants.  That and the fact that health coaches would buy my programs that we were using with our customers led me down another road.  Providing educational materials and coach/client programs to health coaches so they could become entrepreneurs and start their own businesses easier.

My first project was a recipe book called “Sharing the Health”.  It was a collaborative effort and it seemed like everything I was doing with it lined up with what Marie was teaching.  I’d even gotten people I felt were “big fish” to promote our book – before I came to that part of the course.  I learned a lot from that experience and it was rewarding because all the profits went to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

What I learned in B-School…

That’s a hard thing to pinpoint, especially 5 years later.  I had my ideal client nailed.  Most people don’t.  That will be your first big win – that and “Starting the Right Business”.  Starting the Right Business was a brand new bonus the year I started and helped me to determine that THCG was the business to promote.  At that time, making a difference in the world and being location independent were my biggest desires.  Now, you get that bonus before you get started.  That’s why you want to join RIGHT AWAY, as soon as the cart opens.

Next, I learned how to have a website that I control.  In the past, even though I’d taken web design and development and knew how to build a website from scratch, it was a lot of work and not easy to get right.  Week 2 paid for the whole course for me.  I learned that with WordPress, I could control my SEO, build my site beautifully and make changes to it on a daily basis if I wanted to.  Having a website that you had to hire someone to make changes would have slowed me down too much.  Everyone should be able to throw a sale or a new idea up in a few minutes and not have to wait for a month for a web person to do it for you.

I didn’t think I learned much in the communication module, but I did.  It took me to new levels in communication and allowed me to be able to “nurture” and support quickly and in a very inexpensive way.  I had experience with paper newsletters.  I’d created thousands over the years. the idea of being able to create and release one without paying $12,000 for printing and postage each time was just amazing.

Marketing is fun for me.  I love marketing and am good at it.  Marie is authentic and that aligned with my values and principles.  This is a good module for anyone wanting to reach more people quickly. This helped me to get the e-book out to more people.

Most businesses take 5 years to be solid and make a good profit.  My business cost me money and a lot of time.  It started out early and was making money by October of 2012.  By 2013 it had surpassed my $680,000 goal for the first year.  It was incredible and wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for B-School and all the incredible health coaches we work with.

When building a business, it can get overwhelming.  My husband used to come stand at the door of my office and say “I sure wish you were making money for all this effort you put in”.  Husbands don’t understand until the money starts coming in.  Now my husband is very supportive.  My one piece of advice (besides throwing yourself into b-school with your whole heart and soul), is to put one foot in front of the other and stay focused on your purpose.  Keep moving forward because each step doesn’t always bring you satisfaction, but it does take you where your meant to be.

How My Life is Different

I’m not a rags to riches story.

My life was fine before B-School. I had a successful 32-year-old business. I was happily married with two successful children, Ashlie and Jeff and three grandchildren. My parents lived in Florida, and my son, a physicist, lived in England. It was hard to travel and visit. It was expensive, and it was hard to take time off work.

I was an Interior Designer and supported my family with my business. In 2009 I got pretty sick and changed the way I ate to affect my health. I became a health coach…knowing that I couldn’t BE a health coach…but to learn more. It was then I got the idea to help other health coaches. My big dream was to build businesses for health coaches – like an “almost franchise”…something they could walk into and start coaching. We now have that.

My bigger dream was to be able to work from any place and visit my son and his kids and my parents. This program not only taught me how to conduct a healthy business online. It connected me to people who have enriched my life both personally and professionally. I consider my experience in B-School one of the most valuable investments I ever made. I more than made my money back by the 2nd week and now…well…now it is priceless.

A funny story. I didn’t tell my husband how much B-School cost – I knew he would flip a gasket and I knew I was going to do it… so we just skipped the gasket part. About ten months after I started… he asked me how much it cost. I told him, and he sighed and said “worth every penny.”

I would still be in brick and mortar.

There would be no The Health Coach Group without Marie.

I would not have been able to spend weeks with my dad a couple of months before he died – I would have missed it, and it was really good time.

I would still be relying on Skype 12 months a year instead of getting real life in person hugs from my (now 4) grandkids without Marie.

I would be missing out on a lot of great new relationships with B-Schoolers if not for Marie.

This is a low-level part – (but still fun)…compared to all the others… I would still be driving a Saturn instead of a BMW that makes me smile REALLY big when I pull away from stoplights.

My work also enables 12 other people to have incredible income, and I help thousands of health coaches a year learn the business and set up prosperous businesses with programs that transform the lives of 1,000’s of people. It is every boomer career person’s dream. I am making a difference in the lives of others. Life doesn’t get much better than this.
