I want to create a very short little blog to share with you about something that I learned from Hippocrates Health Institute’s course.  First, I want to say, that place is something else.  I love the healing work they do there, the intention and the carry through.  They have had some inspirational stories.

Back to vitamins.   Did you know that you should not be taking them every day for weeks, months and years at a time?  You become immune to them, so after a while you are wasting your money and your time swallowing all those little buggars.    It is good to take a break from your supplements for about a week every other month.

The type of vitamins you should take varies.  I take probiotics, enzymes and multi vitamins every day.  I think everyone should.  I also take Vitamin D because I have been tested low on it.  If you don’t eat animal products you need a B12 supplement.  This is very important…the one big problem vegans have.  I have to get a shot.  There are a lot of pills out there that are B12…but they don’t work.  Some people swear by patches.  There are pills with mushrooms for immunity (I like them in my food).  There are pills with chlorella…I would much rather swallow chlorella than to eat it.  The truth is, you are much better off getting your vitamins and minerals through food, but to get a perfect dose, would be very difficult.

I didn’t really mean for this to be a blog on what kind of vitamins to take, the main thing is that you know that you should take intermittent breaks from your supplements to retain their value.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I vary what/how much I take all the time. I choose intuitively by listening to what my body has to say about it! (and testing when needed-)

Bariatric surgery patients and those with digestive and intestinal issues need more vitamins than most. These things cause malabsorption of nutrients. This is one group that is usually not getting enough so not so sure that a break is good for them.

Hi Kathy, In an ideal world you are correct. They need the break more than anyone because they won’t be getting any nutrients if they build up a resistance to them. This little break gives them the ability to continue to absorb nutrients through the vitamins. Hope that helps. ~Cathy
